Topic: Whitt’s interview
Defense was great. Only allowed 12 first downs.
He thought that the game was going to be a blowout.
Bernard has a great game and is RB1.
They hope that Rising’s injury is not too serious. They will know more tomorrow.
The gameplan was to play conservatively with Wilson in the game. They have confidence in Isaac going forward.
The D backs played well but they were not tested today. Davis played well. He did not give up a catch.
They lost momentum even before Cam went out. Baylor elevated their play in the 2nd quarter.
He asked how the Cam hit looked on TV. He asked if they would have thrown a flag. Riley thinks that they should have thrown a flag, but it really doesn’t matter. Cam was hurt regardless of a flag.
He said he needs to look at the film to see if Cam could have done something different.
We need to run the ball better. We ran below our standards today. Even the pass protection was spotty.
Our young tackles are great but still learning.
He was very upset with the special teams mistakes. We left 7 points on the field.
We will have bigger pass-defense threats in the coming weeks.
Connor O’Toole did some very good things. He has great speed. Fillinger also played great. Logan Fano gave us some good reps.
We will not make any announcement on who will play QB next week.
A few observations and thoughts going into Baylor
– Having Cam back and just knowing good things will happen is so refreshing compared to all last year just hoping we get lucky here and there. But holy hell please learn to slide brother
– Brant = Still an absolute dawg and his chemistry with Cam will be a major problem for every defense
– RB committee looked solid. A lot of versatility in the group. Mitchell is limited this week due to injury so I expect to see more Stanley
– Hope to see OL improvement. They were fine but felt like Cam and Isaac were hurried a lot and RBs didn’t have abundance of daylight
– GET THE BALL TO WRs. We know the TEs have to get theirs, but WRs cannot be an afterthought for another season. First pass of the game was going to be a bomb to Singer but Fano got smoked on a spin move and Cam got blown up. We’re in a great spot for landing the 5* WR but he wants to see that we are actually capable of feeding WRs before he commits. Let’s not ruin it.
– Need great game from the DLs against this mobile Baylor QB. Vimahi being out sucks but we’re also getting guys like Pepa back. DEs need to be fast. LBs should be able to hold their own.
– CB will be of interest to watch . Hope Davis is ready for the big time. Calhoun (Michigan transfer) is practicing again and should be in game rotation soon. Don’t want to move Tao away from Safety and Snowden away from Nickel if don’t have to.
– I hope the regular stadium PA guy is back this week
– I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — F*** day games. Gonna be hot af and that kills a significant amount of stadium energy. End up with students leaving at half and people hiding in the concourses during the game. Stadium ops should do like some TX schools do and have “Hydration Stations” around the stadium giving out ice cold water bottles. Brought to you by Smiths.
– No reason we shouldn’t bully these guys and pull away in the second halfTopic: my grades for the game
given my hopes for this game which I detailed in another post, here are my grades for the game.
QB, A-: Cam did good. He’s clearly not 100% with his running ability, but he did good. Should have had 1 pick. Missed on one or two throws that I saw. Wilson has potential but he needs to take what is given to him.
RB, Incomplete: I don’t feel like SUU presented enough of a challenge to grade anyone, and that is being generous (to Glover at least). I would give them a C, but nobody got seriously hurt, so I’ll be nice and stick with an I.
WR: B+: If they can play this well against better competition, we’re going to have a fun year. No drops (that I saw), guys were open and involved, but not quite involved as they could be. I wanted to see Singer or Money catch a bomb or two. No injuries gives them a grade boost.
TE: A: plenty of TDs here and no injuries.
OL: B-: Fano got beat like a drum a couple of times, so did some of the other guys. Need to improve here. No injuries keeps them out of C territory
DL: B-: Vimahi injury sucks, but at least we have tons of depth. We lost contain several times. Got pressure but didn’t get home as often as I would like.
LB B: Maybe it should be higher, I’m not sure TBH. No injuries is good.
Safety B: Gillman seems good enough but he needs to WRAP UP when he tackles. He missed a tackle or two trying to truck guys when he easily could have wrapped up. That s**t is going to cost us this year if he doesn’t knock it off.
CB: F: I know this sounds harsh, it isn’t the poor guy’s fault… but the CBs HAD to stay healthy. 1 more injury here and we are cooked (unless the Big12 is awful).
EDIT: In case you were wondering, my 1 desire for this game was NO INJURIES. I’m not saying the injuries were avoidable, or they were anyone’s fault. I just wish they didn’t happen. That is all. My grades aren’t necessarily a representation of how I felt the team performed.
More good: Van Fillinger looks like the pre 2023 Van. Dijon Stanley having a role speaks to his unique skill set that the coaches have to get him involved.
The bad/ugly. It looks like Spencer Fano struggled on a few plays. It will be interesting to see if teams scout him and pick up on some of his potential vulnerabilities.
More bad/ugly: if Tao Johnson moves back to corner, who plays free safety? Gilman? And does Nate Ritchie plays Strong Safety? Or vis versa?
Topic: Utah 360 app
My sister works for a company who has produced an app called Utah 360. It will be very useful for those going to the game. You can order concessions and skip the line.
For those who are not going to the game this app will collect and play the post game interviews, media output for many Utah sports and some other content. (Ex: Fano Brothers podcast)
I honestly haven’t explored it extensively but I know that it’s support is tied to NIL deals to help the athletes as well.
I intend to use the concessions portion tonight and test it out. Hopefully it helps the lines.
Go Utes!
