and then follow it up with a 40 yd KO return and 3 play drive. sheesh.
But OnlyU tells me that if we can run the ball effectively, that will decide this game

When was the last time Utah had a receiver catch a simple crossing route and take it to the house? Ohio State did it, UCLA did last week, SC damn near did tonight. I’m racking my brain and the last I remember was in 2004. But there has to be something since then.,, doesn’t there?

Even when they do the right thing, they turn it into a 20 minute production with more twists and turns than Hamlet. Thus leaving everyone with a sour taste in their mouths

who were the “once in a generation” players? Lloyd? Barton and Hanson are in the NFL.
Tafua? He’s no Dimick, Anae or Orchard.
Vonte Davis? McKinney? Sewell?
The only problem with this Defense is the Linebackers and that’s on coaching for not having the next wave ready to go.

down 14 in your own end on 3rd and 8. Let’s bring in QB3/RB4 and throw to him. the only thing more predictable than the “trick” play was the result.

Follow up: If you pause it at 9 seconds, you get a great look at what Rising should have been reading. Corners have squatted on the outside receivers showing you that they are in cover 2. O line is holding their own against a 4 man rush. The top side and middle linebackers are both dropping with Yassmin’s route and Vele is just coming out of…[Read more]

What sickens me is that Vele was uncovered at 8 yards. In my mind, Rising had decided he was going to throw Yassmin’s route before the ball was snapped to try to get him some confidence after the big drop right before. The LB’s bailing deep were obviously reading his eyes.
That’s the one part of Rising’s game that hasn’t stepped up this year.…[Read more]

I think the game comes down to whether or not Utah’s D is able to make Caleb Williams uncomfortable. If he has the same amount of time DTR did, Utah loses by at least 2 scores.

Could = yes. There was enough meat on the schedule this year that as long as traditional strengths didn’t completely disappear and the team got a few breaks along the way, it was definitely possible.
Would = no. I’ve always thought this was a 9-3 teams given the youth on D and the offense not looking improved over 2021.

2008 National Champ replied to the topic C.J. Jacobsen Committs to UTAH!!! in the forum Football 2 years, 10 months ago
Jake, Greg Smith, Sean Knox and LaVon Edwards in 1988. Pretty good defensive backfield all things considered with true freshman at the corners. It’s hard to compare from 35 years ago but I would venture that all of them could play for this year’s team, assuming the same development that kids get these days.

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Dline in the forum Football 2 years, 10 months ago
I’ve gone on ad nauseum about the DE’s not being able to set the edge and keep contain but that is not the biggest problem with the defense. The hole is at LB because Scalley’s design requires them to be able to attack in all 4 directions and make from -2 to 10 yards down field a no-fly zone.
Hanson/Barton, Bernard/Lloyd, Lloyd/Sewell were all…[Read more]

To be fair, you have to get within 5 yards of the other guy to make a tackle. The same plays that worked for OSU worked again this week with not much more resistance. DTR not throwing into tight coverage was the difference.

2008 National Champ replied to the topic situation is pretty simple in the forum Football 2 years, 10 months ago
I laid out a scenario which would allow Utah to attain it’s goals for this season which starts which getting back to the CCG. Not sure where I said it was probable to occur. In fact, I’m pretty sure my second paragraph highlighted how unlikely I thought it was.
