  • Happy for USU, a bit sad for Utah. It gave me a lot of confidence having Gary on staff – the more smart, experienced coaches, the better. Plus, I was really looking forward to having a few recruiting cycles with him on staff. He is a really strong recruiter.

Thank you! People need to r-e-l-a-x on the speculation (I heard his mom had a mixed up order at Cafe Rio and refuses to let her son go anywhere near the place). So much angst over an unsigned recruit. The repetition of speculative perceptions probably only perpetuate unwarranted perceptions.

    Good grief.

IglooDweller (three posts down): “Utah has a perception problem related to Mormons.”

IglooDweller (here): “Perception problem, you hear it all the time. What do you think the perception problem refers to? Is it code? For what?”

Are you stuck in an echo chamber?

Those are some really sheltered Michigan fans that they would be surprised at that; funny to think that they think Utah fans are the sheltered ones. When I hear someone say stuff like that, it is painfully clear that they are the ignorant, uneducated ones that have no idea what the world is like beyond their neighborhood. We are quick to shame…[Read more]

  • Not sure what was visible on TV, but a few things that might not have been seen by those no at the championship game.
    – Dixon was very upset on the sidelines after the second to last Utah offensive series. And Shelley was pacing up and down the sideline nonstop. They both wanted this one very badly. They obviously got another series (and we know…[Read more]

Clay Helton will be back, but assistants will be changing: USC Coaching
Turns out Tee Martin probably should have jumped on an HC job last year when he was one of the hottest assistant coaches around.

In all the discussion of QBs, let’s not forget Drew Lisk. The guy was not highly recruited, but he is a baller, loves Utah, and all he does is win games.
I am sad to see Tuttle leave for many reasons (e.g., depth, the future, recruiting, PR), but he probably saw the writing on the wall that Huntley is going to be the starter this year and next.…[Read more]

They are fun to watch. The OC is Yost, who was with Oregon during their recent glory years. I had a feeling when they hired him that USU had pulled off a major coup by hiring him as Oregon was falling apart. USU’s offense has been really strong this year and very creative. Love is a great QB, too. Glad the Utes are not playing USU this year, they…[Read more]

I did mention Urban Meyer (and I guess Whit is in the eye of the beholder, I consider him a great hire, but it sounds like many would dispute that). Regardless, I am not trying to make an exhaustive list, just pointing out the risks of thinking a new coach is the answer, and how even “home run” hires don’t always pan out.

By the way, here is the…[Read more]

I see plenty of criticism on the site. There is difference, however, between (1) some on the board that are perpetually negative and can never see anything positive and (2) those that can see positives and negatives. For example, after the Weber State game, there were obviously some issues to be addressed, and it makes sense to call those things…[Read more]

For the most part, I agree with your post. The two caveats I would add:

    – Shyne should be playing. He may have fumbled against Weber and it sounds like Whit thinks he has not earned time in practice, that’s all fine and good, but when the starter is injured, you gotta do what you gotta do. It is ridiculous to think that they would keep playing an…[Read more]

  • I understand the sentiment on Taylor, but I am not convinced that he should go. A coach puts players in a position to succeed, it is then up to the players to do it. I think Taylor has done that.

I recognize that some think Taylor should (a) be calling easier plays or (b) is not adequately coaching the players to catch/throw/run, but I am not…[Read more]

I have seen a few ads suggesting there are still tickets available for this Saturday’s game. Can that be true? Is this game really not sold out yet? Seems surprising.

It can be difficult watching a game on TV (without the full field perspective) to know where the fault lies on an unsuccessful passing down. Did the QB fail to see the open receiver or hold it too long? Did the O line fail to give enough time for the QB to pass? Were the receivers not getting open?
I would guess the problems at UNI were a…[Read more]

Really fun to see Dixon and Enis getting some catches. And fantastic to see so many receivers (and TEs) get touches – it is hard to stop an offense when you can’t blanket a single receiver.
Amazing to see how Covey appears to be back in full form after the two years hiatus. I would hate him if he were on another team – not because he is arrogant,…[Read more]

Grayson’s stat line was pretty impressive in the summer league game yesterday. His shooting percentage was not good, but his ability as a shooter is already pretty well established. To me, the more important takeaway is what a good shooter does to contribute when the shots are not falling (i.e., get assists, rebounds, steals, play defense). He did…[Read more]

The guy is incredible at making people miss, but I am curious as to his actual speed as measured at a place like the NFL combine. Is Covey extremely fast (i.e., fastest on the team fast), or is he really fast (i.e., among the faster players on the team) and has great shiftiness. I have never seen a 40 or 100 meter time for him.

  • Fascinating article about recruiting and branding.
    http://picksixpreviews.com/how_to_win_in_recruiting.html
It makes perfect sense. Unless a school is a blue-blood, they need to brand themselves as unique in some way (unfortunately for Utah, “family” is not unique anymore–the article even says as much). Some schools have established a brand…[Read more]
