PAC 12 Network did a show called top 12 Utes, that was on yesterday.  Their list:

      12.  Roy Jefferson
      11.  Steve Smith
      10. Nate Orchard
      9.  Scott Mitchell
      8. Devontae Booker
      7. Tom Hackett
      6.  Larry Wilson
      5.  Star Lotulelei
      4.  Jordan Gross
      3.  Luther Ellis
      2.  Eric Weddle
      1.  Alex Smith
So what do you think?  Any surprises?  Who did they miss?

If Hacket is on there, then Marv Bateman from the 70s should have been on the list. Excellent punter and kicker. I think he still holds the record for longest FG.

I also think that the running back/returner Monroe from the 80s deserved a place on the list. Jefferson probably deserves a better position than 12th IMO.

Going way back Lee Grosscup, Carl Monroe, Dell Rogers, that’s a great list though.

Is this looking at their college careers only? If it includes NFL careers, I would put Weddle, Gross and Steve Smith 1,2,3 in no particular order.  If looking at college career only, I’m not sure Steve Smith even makes the list.

If it includes pro career, our only Hall-of-Famer, Larry Wislon should be number 1.  Jefferson also had a great pro career.

I’d say that even “college only” Steve should make it…maybe not because of what he did in his playing days, but definitely from what he done since as an ambassador to Utah.

How about Marv Fleming, he has 4 Super Bowl rings.

I put Dimick over Orchard. But can’t argue with the rest.

Jamaal Anderson seems like a huge omission

Not really.  He had a better pro career than college.  McBride didn’t use him nearly enough back in the day.

I agree with Larry Wilson, guy was THE ute in the NFL for a long time. What is interesting about these lists is they tend to favor the most recent guys at the expense of the older players that may have better credentials.

Manny Fernandez, Bob Trumpy and a few I’m probably forgetting from the olden times.

I’m sorry but any “all time” Utes list that doesn’t have Eddie Johnson on it lacks all credibility.

IMO Weddle was easily the best player we have had in college or pros in since 2000. Of course, Alex Smith had a huge impact, but I don’t think he was a better college player than Weddle. I mean, weddle was our best player on defense, and maybe on offense as well. He was just waaaay better than anyone else on the football field almost every single game, heck, he even gave a future HOF wide receiver all he could handle.
