I was a student athlete. We shared the weight room with the student body and lived in the dorms with a meal ticket. To say the university pocketed the money is wrong. I have a grandson playing high school football and would be thrilled if he got a scholarship and opportunity to play college football.
I’m not sure what my argument was? You have a…[Read more]

I know I’m late to the conversation but I’m not losing sleep over this. “According to a source close to the situation, Calhoun’s decision came after receiving offers from two different programs that Utah was not willing to match financially. Calhoun was offered “nearly double” the amount of money the Utes offered him for the 2025 season, the sou…[Read more]

Loyalty aka Branding aka Tribalism.
Coke v Pepsi. I’ve seen people pitch a total fit t a restaurant because one was served instead of the other and I know for a fact that the person in question didn’t notice the difference when I passed them the wrong product in a glass in the past.
In other words.. It’s all marketing. We have been convinced as…[Read more]

The transfer portal is the wild Wild West right now. The ncaa is doing nothing to fix the process.
Schools can’t contact players during the season or before the portal opens but “agents” can at anytime.
The Colo st head coach said in a press conference his top 30 players have all been contacted by “agents” telling them they can get them deal…[Read more]

is this how those blue laws that prohibit riding a donkey backwards in town square came into being?

RUUTES replied to the topic NIL vs University employees in the forum Football 6 months, 1 week ago
a lot depends on the conditions of that specific employment. If the players were unionized or under individual contracts, then many elements can be negotiated. Are they independent contractors or actual employees?
If they were employees of the “state” then there are conflict rules that may also come into play. A state employee has to…[Read more]

Honestly I don’t think the NIL wild west will continue mainly because it’s going to start impacting the big dogs. Do you think that Alabama’s donors and collective are happy this year with what they paid vs where the team currently sits? As soon as a few more Blue Bloods feel the pain of underachieving while over paying, changes will be forced…[Read more]

I’ve moved my donations from the CC to academic departments. I’ve dropped my season tickets and don’t even buy more red gear (though I honestly have more than I have room for anyway).
My viewing of CFB has dropped from 10-14 hours a week to maybe 1 game. And my attitude is rapidly moving into full disinterest.
I’m getting tired of the greed…[Read more]

That is how it works. Nike took a risk on Michael Jordan and it paid off massively. 7 million invested in this kid for whatever reason seems like a short term large investment in a kid that could lead to better things.
Pointing out the hypocrisy is one thing. It just seems like you are jealous Utah can’t do it. Don’t try to make a moral arg…[Read more]

It’s not a moral issue, IMO, and I do not blame a kid for looking for the most money he can get. Nothing wrong with that. It’s not the kids – it’s the system that has got our of hand.

I am fine with the concept of NIL. I think it is great that a kid gets paid for selling his jersey or doing an add for a local company. Paying a kid for his his NIL is fine. But, offering a kid 7 million before he has ever played a game …
I can only speak for me, and for me the entire NIL/portal thing has gotten out of hand and starting to…[Read more]

I don’t need to spare you at all. Universities lost the court battle. They should 100% be allowed to sell their image. The current system when it comes to morals is infinitely better than what it was in the past.
The finger wagging moral argument of ending poverty over a kid getting paid also doesn’t matter to me. It is just virtue sig…[Read more]

If he has a higher market value somewhere else, the U and the collective need to figure out if they are willing to match it or let him walk. Maybe they don’t even need to match it to get him to stay, they just need to offer more than they currently are and he may see a reason to stay if he thinks he will get better coaching or a better shot at…[Read more]

The facilities also took private donations to pay for those. You are over simplifying my statement to fit your own argument.
Utah has always been very smart with their money. Compared to like Arizona who takes private donations and then overspends the athletic budget. Or California who never took donations but went into the red to pay for…[Read more]

We are watching numerous players acting like Dorian Singer at Arizona. The bag is tempting, but a starting spot that has you on track for the NFL is worth far more than any one or two year bag and the associated risks of transferring. Dorian Singer’s year chasing the bag in USC may end up costing him tens of millions in lifetime earnings.

My sentiments exactly proud Ute. Eagle have you seen the football and basketball facilities? University pocketing the money? The excess money has gone back to improving the facilities for the players for many years. I’m fine with paying the players but most athletic departments are losing money.
