I hate BYU for many reasons, but buying players isn’t one of them. They’re just playing the game. Yet another of the long list of items pushing me away from college athletics.

See, I don’t understand thus criticism. This is the world we live in. If Utah landed him, it’d be the exact same thing, we bought him.
Acceptance is the answer.

I assume the proper heading should be:
“BYU
landsbuys No. 1 player…” -

Right on. Yeah I’m 5-9 on a good day and 170. By far my favorite skis of all time and best powder skis are the Atomic Bent Chetler 120’s. They’re fantastic in all conditions, variable, muck, powder.

Tony: saw your video from yesterday. That is terrific. Question for you: I am thinking of buying new powder skis. What are thelength and width of your skis? I would guess we are about the same size, though not ski level. I am about 5’10, 170 lbs. Advice appreciated.

Proudute’s post brings back lots of great memories! I was a student at the U from 1960-1965, and I had to look up the following because it was so long ago.
Jack Gardner was the coach, and the 1060-61 team went 23-8, and took a deep run into the NCAA tournament. Players like McGill, Jim Rhead, and Rich Ruffell, were a big part of that team.

So, looking at all former Ute basketball players, what would your starting five and backups be? Here is mine:
PG – Andre Miller
SG – Mike Newlin
SF – Jerry Chambers
PF – Keith Van Horn
C – Andre BogutSecon Team
PG – Jeff Jonas (Pace Mannion should also be in he discussion.)
SG – Ticky Burden
SF – Danny Vranes
PF – Billy McGill (He played a…[Read more] -

Don’t forget the late Kenny Gardner. Played with Mike Newlin and they ushered in the Huntsman center in 1969. Also Granny Lash who averaged 13 pts a game for the 1964 Chambers team. He should be on the list in name alone. One of my favorite all time Utes was Charlie Whiting. Always giving 110 % and was a great person. Went on to coach Skyline v…[Read more]

that’s funny, becasue Andre was not a good shooter in college (much closer to being bad than good). I can imagine a guy like Chris wouldn’t have the softest shot in the world, so Andre’s may have sounded softer, but he wasn’t known for having a soft touch.

Andre Miller was my next door neighbor in the old Austin Hall when we were both freshmen. I have so many memories of him.
Across the hall was Chris Fuamatu Ma’afala’s room. Andre and Chris used to go outside and shoot baskets together on the outdoor court that was just outside the building. When the weather was nice, I would open the window to…[Read more]

It looks like you became a fan in the late 70s / early 80s. Your list is comprehensive. Nothing to disagree with.
Here are a couple of players who I loved to watch who were before your time:
Mike Newlin – He was a stud who had a long NBA career. I think he led the nation in free throw shooting percentage.
Merv Jackson – He was a sophomore on…[Read more] -

I’m impartial to Andre Miller and Michael Doleac. When Chris Jones was coaching with Majerus he would do summer camps at a place near my home, and he brought Andre and Mike to play with us. He always had those two do a three point shooting contest. He would have us all vote on who we thought would win, and if our guy lost, we had to run.…[Read more]

The first Utes that I saw play were the Delon Wright, early Jakob Poeltl days. I am a freshman at the U, so I’ve seen only some glimpses of Utah men’s basketball being good. With the players I’ve seen I always liked Poeltl, he was a commanding big who could dominate and that was the type of ball player that I tried to model my game after. After…[Read more]

The first Utes I remember seeing play in Einer Nielson Field house were Jerry Chambers and Merv Jackson. A neighbor who worked the scoreboard would take us up to watch practice and Merv Jackson and his No. 10 jersey became my favorite player and I always picked the No. 10 when given the opportunity. Others over the years include most of those…[Read more]

Man what great memories. Jerry Chambers was a 6’4 center that averaged close to 40 a game in the NCAA tournament. Merv Jackson had a great ABA career. Einar Nelson field house days. One team not mentioned was Mike Newlin and the late Kenny Gardner team. Jim Mahler was the center. That team opened the Huntsman center around 1969.
1998 team was s…[Read more]

Some dude last year did some comparisons on X and it showed that in all of the PAC12 and Big12, Utah was 3rd in highest charge per game (tickets and club fees combined). I didn’t check his work, but the few I looked at indicated he was probably accurate. Which, if all we are comparing against are Oregon and SC, I get it. But reality is we are…[Read more]
