    Here is my position-by-position thoughts.

QB – (Net +) I hope we have a healthy Rising and I “hope” that Johnson is our backup and that we have a package where he plays 4-5 plays a game.

TE (Net even) I know we lose Kincaid but we get Kuithe back and I hope Yassmin continues to make progress. Also, I hope Jacobsen is in the mix as a freshman.

WR (Net +) We lose two seniors. However, neither caught a lot of passes. I think Parks and Vele will be better because of experience and this Matthews kid sounds like he could see some action.

Oline (Net even) We lose some guys but overall have a very experienced line with some new players coming in.

Dline (Net +) We have some young talent that I believe will be better because of experience. We also have added Fano and others to the mix.

LBs (Net even) We lose Diabate and gain the kid from Stanford. Barton should be improved.

DBs (Net even) We lose an All-American but have a lot of studs, a talented transfer, great recruiting at the position. This could be a Net+ by the end of the season.

Overall I think we will be a better, more experienced team in 2023. However, I am not sure our record will be much better because of the very difficult schedule we have.

    Go Utes!!!

Truly impressing in his time out in the islands.

Quote: “One of the most technically sound offensive tackles in the country, Fano continued to prove his worth on Tuesday, doing a tremendous job of squaring up defenders and maintaining active feet to hold his ground in the one on one battles. The Utah signee is coming off a really strong week at the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, where he proved his positional versatility and high-level competitiveness, and he’s been equally impressive on his first trip to the islands. He’s patient and always appears to be in total control, absorbing contact with a strong base and showing the bend to offset the bullrush. Fano wants to gain 15 pounds before the start of fall camp and, if he’s able to do that, has enough savvy to help the Utes early in his college career.”

Fano getting 5* would be a great stress test for CB’s hosting service

This is the best comment I’ve read in a while 🙂

I’m waiting for it to happen also. Lander Barton was a 5-star On3, but was 4-star on Rivals, 247, and ESPN. Close, but I’d love a consensus 5-star where all the recruiting services rate him a 5-star. I think it will happen some day.

I think Fano might get a bump, but probably not to 5-star. Regardless, Utah’s OLine recruiting this time is one of the best in the country – and that is exciting:

I think Spencer Fano is going to get a 5th star this week.

He got a huge shoutout after the All-American Bowl and had an incredible week.

I can genuinely say that I’ve waited my entire Utah fan lifetime that I’ve hoped for a true 5 star recruit to join Utah. I understand we’ve had 5-star transfers come to the hill, but this is 5 star out of high school that picked us. An OL no less.

Another massive step in the right direction. Go Utes!

I think people are sleeping on Jackson. Tavion Thomas and Joe Williams were in a class of their own, when talking Utah RB’s. Then Zach Moss and Booker were the next level down.

Jackson has the ability to be better than Thomas and Williams. He is big like Thomas and fast like Joe.

And, like you said, he was a QB playing RB last year. He will add muscle to parts of his body and take muscle away from other parts. He will have bigger, thicker shoulders next year and be quicker. His shoulder pads will be RB pads and not QB pads.

And our OL will be better. People talk about being worried about traveling to Baylor. Defense and the run game travels. And our defense will be better Damuni than with Diabete. And Logan Fano was looking like a star at BYU before getting hurt. He should be able to keep up Gabe Reid’s level of play. And Van Filinger will be back. And Barton will be better, etc.

Our front 7 will be as good as anyone’s. Our defense will be NASTY.

And our run game will be top notch.

Damuni and Jackson will take our breath away next year. We will be shocked at how great they are.

8-4 (not including the bowl game loss :)), Three in conference losses on the road and loss to Baylor on the road. Still a lot of questions in a few position groups. I get a very few teams go a full year playing their best every week.

Utah needs to improve in a few areas if they take the next step to winning another P12 Championship.

Edge rush: who steps up to be the next Orchard, Kruger, Tafua, Anae, Dimmick, etc? Crazy Anae and Dimmick played together. Hopefully Ellis, Fillinger, Kennedy, and Fano step up. O’toole adding 20 pounds will help. Utah has been missing that feared edge rusher for a couple years.
LB: Barton’s been amazing as a true Freshman. Hopefully Damuni and up and coming players push for the other LB position and put pressure on Reid for his LB position.
Safety: should be solid here as long as the coverage issues and communication improves. Vaki was a nice surprise and will get the coverage stuff cleaned up. Ritchie, Isbell, should fill in with Bishop.
Team leadership on defense: Lloyd’s leadership was missed. Not sure if CPIII or Hubert stepped up.
TE: Kuithe back is huge of course. Yasmin is a nice story, but needs to improve his TE football IQ starting with the Juggs machine. Last play time I remember from Munir was the dropped pass followed by a penalty in the first USC game. Could not tell if he played another down since. Kind of head scratcher Utah did not find a good, athletic TE in the early portal market. Too late now moving to the Phase II portal leftovers after Spring Ball. Maybe the Idaho Freshman steps up.
WR: Same old story. Would be nice for Rising to have a consistent WR able get open in 1v1 coverage. Utah WRs get no respect against the athletic teams. Next years going to be fun to follow with all the QB talent. Go Utes!

My biggest concern for 2023 is defensive line. 2022 was a tough year for the group – inability to pressure the QB was evident in big time moments. Hoping that an off-season with the current group + Fano joining will help here

We have now got a pretty good idea of who will be on the 2023 football team.  There will be some more portal changes after spring ball.

    Offense:

We will lose a couple of linemen, but four of five linemen will have been starters.  This bodes well for our offense.  Rising will be back, so we will have an experienced QB which is huge.  We lose Kincaid but Kuithe is coming back as well as Yassmin.  Hopefully, Jacobsen will see some playing time.  We lose two experienced receivers in Enis and Dixon.  However, neither of them was critical in our passing game, and Parks and Cope are showing promise.  The RB room will be interesting.  I really like Jackson as RB1.  I think he could be very good.  I hope Curry comes back and is healthy and I hope Glover gets past his weaknesses and becomes a strong runner.  Overall, I think we may have a better offense in 2023 than 2022 because of experience.

    Defense:

We lose Herbert, Phillips, Gabe Reid, and Diabate.  Phillips is a big loss but we gain a tall, talented, and experienced CB via the portal.  We also have two excellent CB recruits coming in.  We will have two starters returning at LB in Reid and Barton.  We will be adding Damuni to the mix too.  At safety, we will be getting Richie back with Bishop, Vaki, and Isbell.  We should be solid there.  We do not lose any of our D line who played significant minutes outside of Gabe Reid and he was not an every-down player.  We have added Fano.  Our defense improved over time in 2022.  Our defense should be better in 2023.

I believe we will be a better, more experienced team in 2023.  However, our schedule will be the most difficult we have ever had IMO.  I highly doubt we will be undefeated, but it should be a fun season.

    Go Utes!!!
