I’m glad that we don’t play the Wildcats during the regular season. They’re stacked on offense and look like a really well coached team.

Agreed, would be a good championship game if we both get there. Avery looks nonchalant and in complete control.

As not an original Utahn, can anyone tell me what the attraction is to play for BYU? Is it because they’re like the LDS Notre Dame?
-
RoboUteParticipant
It’s a purity thing. The idea is that it’s the most virtuous for a Mormon to attend BYU because it’s a totally “for Mormons by Mormons” thing. On top of that Mormons will always support things, like BYU, which they perceive as intrinsically Mormon because they conflate the success of those things with the success of their religion.
So it’s no wonder at all why they are so passionate about their teams’ success. In the local culture someone who attends or cheers for BYU is often seen as making a more virtuous and pure choice and if you live your whole life in those circles that matters a lot. I think it’s easy to imagine how a local insular religion can apply pressure and shape perception in unique ways.
This creates another side of a coin, which is Utah. So they don’t just think they’re better than Utah for regular old team rivalry reasons, they believe they’re better on a moral and spiritual level, quite literally. The religion has this tier system built into it and the long and short of it is there are some whose souls are simply worth more. It’s especially bad news if an individual has been offered the opportunity to follow “the church” but has refused. That’s Utah.
-
The Miami UteParticipant
Thanks for the explanation.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
I think you are just inside your own echo chamber of a belief system.
There are many fine Mormons that attend usu or Utah or any other school for that matter. Provo is most definitely a minority within the church.
-
RoboUteParticipant
Other belief systems don’t have echo chambers concerning mormonsim. I learned all of this as a Utahn.
-
Central Coast UteParticipant
Wow, you couldn’t be more wrong. The top leadership within the LDS church are all Utah graduates. Having lived both inside and outside of Utah, I can tell you for sure that it’s the Mormons in Utah that know that you do not have to go to BYU to be seen as better than. That’s how a large segment of Utahs fan base are active members of the LDS faith. Go outside of Utah, and you’ll find a tiny bit of that l, but even then, you’ll find their fans of the local teams where they live, too. It’s quite literally only BYU fans that think they are better members of the church than everyone else.
-
RoboUteParticipant
“t’s quite literally only BYU fans that think they are better members of the church than everyone else.”
That is exactly what my comment says. I guess I expect some confusion since it’s not like it got into the nitty gritty or was long enough to be super exact, but ya.

Byu is the ultimate church, university experience.
Some members of the church want that. Others don’t.
Simple as that.
-
Ted LassoParticipant
I don’t think it’s necessary to frame it as a religious conspiracy. BYU attracts people for various reasons. For me, my parents went to BYU, so I naturally grew up supporting the school.
BYU can be an easier place to attend if you’re LDS, simply because the culture there is more accepting of LDS beliefs, being an LDS school. Since LDS beliefs can sometimes be seen as unusual, it’s nice to have a community that’s like-minded and tolerant. I get that this can be off-putting for some, but for others, it’s a draw.
For those who aren’t LDS, many people are still drawn to BYU because they appreciate the values the school upholds. Some may not agree with BYU’s moral code, and that’s fine—it doesn’t make anyone better or worse—but others do like it and want to be part of that environment.
And let’s be honest, BYU has the cheapest tuition in the state, which is probably the biggest motivator for a lot of people.
-
RoboUteParticipant
“and that’s fine—it doesn’t make anyone better or worse—”
The world would be a better place if people actually widely believed this. Unfortunately, they don’t. I would believe that you do. But I also know plenty of others who don’t, and each of them would lie to you about it.
-
Ted LassoParticipant
There are idiots on both sides of the rivalry. Sure, I’ve heard BYU fans who think they’re morally superior to Utah fans, and I’ve heard Utah fans spew bigoted nonsense about BYU fans. But making sweeping generalizations about entire fanbases is just stupid. There are good people on both sides, whether they’re LDS or not. Honestly, it’s getting pretty old dragging religion into what should just be about the sports.
-
RoboUteParticipant
perhaps so, but that’s why people feel the way they do. Notice if you reread my first comment I never framed what people who attend BYU believe about others to be the truth, it merely might be their perspective. In turn, others’ perspective of them might be skewed by a vocal minority that’s misrepresenting them. Until we grow, these unfortunate circumstances are reality. It’s probably a bad idea to ignore them simply because things would be better if they didn’t exist.

I don’t want to tell anybody what to think, but I would love to share my perspective. I was born, raised, and still live in Salt Lake City. I have personally known a handful of players and coaches (mostly all members of the church) from both schools. I’ve been a diehard Ute since I was a little kid. I am a very active member of the church. And I also hope that BYU loses every game in every sport. With that said…
While I think some BYU fans (and/or members of the church) might be the way you described, I don’t think it’s fair to make a general statement like that about an entire group of people. Between family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, people I go to church with, etc. I probably know (on a pretty good personal level) thousands of BYU fans. I could probably count on one hand the number of BYU fans I know who are the way you described. The vast majority of them do not think they are morally or spiritually better than other people. That is not a teaching in the church. The church teaches that you should worry about yourself and not judge other people.
It is not considered more virtuous if you attend BYU versus any other school. You might hear a joke like that once in a while (I can only imagine BYU fans joking like that w/ Utah fans who are members of the church like me), but they don’t actually believe it or mean it. I don’t know what % of Utah enrollment, season ticket holders, etc. are members of the church, but it is no doubt pretty high. As somebody already mentioned, many of the church leaders (including the current president/prophet) were students at the U (not BYU).
Are there a lot of church members who are BYU fans just b/c of the church affiliation? Yes (but isn’t that logical?). Is that b/c of all the reasons you said? No. For the most part, they are just sports fans and choose a team like any of us (they live nearby, they went there, their family or friends were fans, that team was good when they were a kid, they liked a certain player when they were a kid, they liked the uniforms/colors when they were a kid, etc.). In this day and age, do most of the players on that team go there b/c they feel some sort of obligation to the church or b/c they have some kind of self-righteous motivation? For sure not. Does Utah lose every recruit to BYU when both schools have offered? Obviously not. Utah wins more than it loses. Look how many actively practicing members of the church coach or play at Utah. Kyle Whittingham, Morgan Scalley, Britain Covey, Karene Reid, etc. Also, BYU recruits players who are not members of the church (look at their basketball recruiting class or look at either of their last two starting QBs). These people go where they think is best for them. It’s not any different than any other school…1) Where do they have an opportunity to get playing time? Would you rather sit on the bench at one school or start for BYU? I cringe saying this, but BYU’s basketball program is in way better shape than ours is right now. So they are naturally going to get better recruits than us until we have a better story to tell. 2) Where do they think they can develop into the best football player possible (and have an opportunity in the NFL)? Obviously, BYU has a number of good players in the NFL. Utah has more, but BYU has players in the NFL too. 3) Where can they make money? BYU has an NIL story too (aka Ryan Smith; note, the church does not financially sponsor BYU athletics). 4) Cultural fit (which is obviously influenced by the church at BYU) plays a role anywhere. The list goes on and on. At the end of the day, these players are going where they think is best for them (and where they’ve been offered). Just b/c Utah might lose a recruit to BYU once in a while, it is not reasonable for any of us to think that it’s just b/c of some obligation to the church or some self-righteous motivation. If anybody feels like that, it’s one in a million.
In terms of what you said about the church’s beliefs. I really don’t want to get into that on this forum b/c this is about football/sports. If anybody wants to know more about the church’s beliefs, I would love to have a private conversation w/ you outside of this group chat. Just message me back. But what was said about the church’s beliefs was either inaccurate or misleading. We absolutely do not believe some souls are worth more than others.

You are correct about the church’s teachings and stance on BYU. I think the internet has really tarnished BYU fans’ appearance to the rest of the world. I know B12 fans like them, but that’s it. Everyone else can’t stand them.
Also, remember when Bronco was telling recruits they couldn’t be a good member of the church if they didn’t go to byu?-
lgt4141Participant
I, too, am a very active member of the church who grew up in Utah and went to Utah. We always got alongMy wife grew up in Ohio and went to BYU. She was 1 of 4 kids in her high school who were Latter Day Saints. She wanted to go to college somewhere where she was around people with the same beliefs and values of her. For her it was the right decision to go to BYU.
I have siblings who graduated from both schools. With my family and in laws we joke about both schools and will step up trash talk during the Holy War but it is all in fun and we still get along no matter who wins.
Like others have said on the internet a tiny fraction of the fanbase can make the whole fanbase look bad. The internet does this to so many things. Let’s not get into politics. 🙂
They are both great schools academically and can be a great place to get a degree. I don’t care if my kids go to either one or somewhere else I just want my kids to go to college and get a good education.

“Obviously, if you do what’s right on and off the field, I think the Lord steps in and plays a part in it. Magic happens.”
When Bronco, Collie, and others say things like these I feel like it sort of disagrees with the “few bad apples” thing, no? Surely it’s not everyone, but it seems just as silly to pretend it’s no one.

” If anybody feels like that, it’s one in a million.”
Good writeup. But I wish so badly that self righteousness was one in a million. That has never and will never be true of any group of people ever. I wish it was one in a hundred. I can’t possibly see that assertion being made in good faith and sound reckoning

As a former student at ybu-p, I’d personally witnessed a ton of “superiority” comments from the student body. Here are a few.
1. “BYU is the Harvard of the West.”
2. “The only reason why people go to Utah, is because they were rejected by BYU.”. They also claim that’s why Utah fans hate ybu-p.
3. “Utah professors are anti-Mormon.”
4. “Everybody at Utah is always drunk/is a dirtbag/wears a mullet/has a goatee.”
5. “BYU alumni have higher earning power./Nobody’s wants to hire Utah alumni./Most HR managers throw out resumes with ‘University of Utah’ degrees./University of Utah degrees are worthless./I’d turned down a full ride scholarship to the U, but received nothing from the Y, but I still chose the Y.”
6. “I had beer poured on me at Rice Stadium.”
The disdainful sneers of those fellow students saying that suggests they really believe it. It’s not spoken in jest, or “rivalry” trash talking. As an out-of-stater, I didn’t know any better, so I’d just assumed it was true. After all, why go through all that trouble saying that were it not so? And then I met Utah student’s and alumni, and realized that all of that nonsense was just folklore. The “legends” are so common, they just adopt it as their own. There was so much phoniness down there, and they either “can’t” or “won’t” think for themselves. I just couldn’t stomach it. And when I’d transferred to the U, I’d met a lot of other former ybu-p students who all had similar experiences. And I’m not talking about the ones who’d “got caught” either. I’m talking about the ones who’d left on their own accord — sans “academic” and/or “Honor Code” expulsions.

A lot of members of the Church feel a natural affinity for BYU. Some feel obligated to cheer for BYU. Outside of that, BYU is a highly regarded school academically. Their rankings are inflated by the fact that it is dirt cheap, but it is nevertheless a good school.
There are a lot of good reasons to attend/play football for BYU. Kalani is a likeable guy. Provo is an easy, if incredibly bland, place to live. Its easier to stay out of trouble there…
I’m no BYU fan, but there are plenty of good reasons to go to BYU depending on what you are looking for.

I am a little extra happy when BYU fields a competitive team. Circling November 9, I’m hoping for an undefeated Utah and a 1-loss BYU. If that’s not an ESPN Game Day then f**k the SEC/B1G/ESPN schedulers, that will be hands down the best Big 12 game of the Year. I for one, am hoping for that outcome.
Now excuse me, I’m taking my horse to go find the cart that’s way ahead of me.
