2008 National Champ replied to the topic This team had a good year in the forum Football 2 years, 7 months ago
I go back to Fassel so I’ve got a really good feel for what a painful Utah season feels like and 2022 doesn’t even register on that scale. Like I said above, a single result (losing the Rose Bowl) doesn’t move the needle for me. Utah could have won, they didn’t, congratulate the other team and move on.
Where I differ from many on this site is…[Read more]

At some point, you have to decide if you are developing or this is who you are. We’re told that it took time to build the roster (12 years in P5 and counting) but at the same time we are told that we aren’t there yet and if you just give the process a few more years.,, If the longest tenured staff in the conference can’t put together the…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Gotta say it and I know it comes when I’m being irrational. in the forum Football 2 years, 7 months ago
As a freshman in high school, I was sitting in the stands with my girlfriend’s family and we watched her older brother make a tackle and then lay on the field motionless. He was put in the ambulance and died later that evening without ever regaining consciousness.
Football is a beautiful game but occasionally it provides some truly brutal…[Read more]

I think the issue is not one specific result, but the totality of the results. And that probably doesn’t really capture it…
At the macro level, we were told that this was a far improved team in every aspect over 2021 but record wise, it was exactly the same: 10-4, Pac-12 Champ, Rose Bowl loser.
There is also no firm rule that a team must lose…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic This year’s defense in the forum Football 2 years, 7 months ago
My reply to Chinnig was based on him calling out Hubert on multiple threads.
As for your point on the Defense, of course it didn’t look like what we are all used to. Linebackers have always been critical to the scheme Scalley runs and it was manned this year by a guy better suited to EDGE, a true freshman and a former walk-on. For the first…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Well that was rough in the forum Football 2 years, 7 months ago
Ludwig gonna Ludwig. I know a lot of people think he’s the sheet, but look at how bad Utah was in the 1st quarter this year. Those are all scripted plays which rarely produced anything. It wouldn’t be until Rising started audibling that the offense would get a spark.

Hubert? He was exactly who he should have been – a kid who had missed most of the last 3 years with injury. He played well at times and made some mistakes. I’m not sure what your expectations were but it seems like perfection from a first time starter is a pretty high bar.

2008 National Champ replied to the topic We are in trouble in the forum Football 2 years, 7 months ago
to be fair, Rising was stinking up the place before he got hurt and Barnes never seemed to get a decent snap. 8 for 21, 95 yards with a pick was not the game he (Rising) wanted to end his career on.

That has always been the SEC argument, that they are so deep as a conference that every week is essentially a championship game. And they rack up enough non-conference wins by playing an extra G5 in place of the 9th conference game that they can fall back on overall record to support that.
When the Pac as a whole starts winning the majority of…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Your opinion, is it better to sit in the endzone or the corner sections? in the forum Football 2 years, 7 months ago
ditto on the higher is better. I had goal line seats (about 30 rows up) for the 2007 UW/UCLA game and had to spend at least half of the game looking at the jumbotron replays to see what happened. You lose almost all visibility for anything happening out past the 30 on your side of the field due to the team on the sidelines and by then, you also…[Read more]

unfortunately, 2023 Utah won’t get the benefit of the doubt from the 2022 season. Schedule wise you trade Stanford for Cal which should be a wash, but then you also trade at WSU for at UW which is a better team at a tougher stadium as well as home San Diego State for at Baylor. All of a sudden the most talented team(s) in the history of Utah…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Rose Bowl Depth chart in the forum Football 2 years, 7 months ago
I see Lawler is listed as the backup for both Corner spots. What happened to Fabian Marks? He sure dropped off the map after his injury last year.
Hope Bernard has been working on his backpedal if there are only 3 CB’s available for another Rose Bowl.
(and yes, I fully understand that published depth charts are meaningless)

FWIW, while D1 transfers can sign scholarship paperwork and announce their transfer destination, they aren't obligated to a college until they actually attend a class at their new school. It isn't like NLIs signed by HS or junior college prospects.
— Chris Karpman (@ChrisKarpman) December 21, 2022

Stanley always struck me as someone who they would try to put in the Covey/Dixon role instead of a true back.

Snowden is .8892 and Mitchell is .8898 which puts them in the “borderline 4 star” category. I count 8 in the >.88 to <.90 range. Statistically speaking, there probably in very little difference in any of those 8 other than the prestige of saying 4 star instead of high 3 star.

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Former Ute QB Peter Costelli transferring again in the forum Football 2 years, 7 months ago
We’re starting to see some pretty glaring examples of the cost of the Covid year. Nate Johnson got to play in 2021 and is looking prepared for the college level while Costelli, Ethan Calvert and Tufaga didn’t get reps their senior year and seem to be way behind.
I don’t have time to do the research but it would be interesting to see if there is…[Read more]
