krindor replied to the topic Could Ryan Smith become BYU's "Uncle Phil"? in the forum They So Poo Poo 3 years, 7 months ago
Here’s the thing we don’t give enough attention to. There’s a MASSIVE difference between Ryan Smith and Phil Knight.
They’re both billionaires. But Ryan Smith is somewhere between $1.5B-$3B in net worth. And a lot of that is tied up in the Jazz. Phil Knight is around $65B in net worth. Phil Knight also has the keys at Nike and ins there that…[Read more]

krindor replied to the topic Massey college football composite ratings in the forum Football 3 years, 7 months ago
I do think there’s some value in having teams be consistently good. If the PAC12 has two top 10 teams every year, but it’s on a rotating basis over a 6 year cycle, that doesn’t get the same respect as Oregon and USC (or Utah) being a perennial top 10 team.
USC has the easiest path to that, but it doesn’t have to be them, agreed

krindor replied to the topic Ducks or WSU in the forum Football 3 years, 7 months ago
Have to root for Oregon. Gives us a better higher-profile opponent and also makes the conference look better.
The ACC has been weak for years, but nobody notices because Clemson has been so dominant. If we want the PAC12 getting more respect, it doesn’t happen by parity, it happens by a few teams standing out as top quality on a national level.…[Read more]

As a current member of the Armed Forces (active duty Air Force), I appreciate the support, but am also fully supportive if someone wants to thumbs down a post that they disagree with them. Based on context, I think he meant that Oregon is now reaching a state (like Utah) where they could basically still back into it, even if they collapsed down the stretch. Not that either team will do so, but that they could at this point.

Also, what BYU is doing for walk-ons, while great, shouldn’t be considered the same as a scholarship.
Leaving aside the ego/recognition issues already addressed, a walk-on at BYU now has their tuition paid for and has to go to a couple events a semester in exchange for that (in addition to all the football practice stuff).
A scholarship player…[Read more]

krindor replied to the topic Transfer portal question in the forum Football 3 years, 9 months ago
Slightly predates the portal (but the idea was basically the same, just not formalized), but Stevie Tu’ikolovatu left our team as a backup DT who wasn’t getting playing time, went to USC, made an all-conference team and was drafted into the NFL.
That’s 2016 though, nothing since 2018 stands out

krindor replied to the topic im inclined to say that grad transfer qbs are just probably not good in the forum Football 3 years, 9 months ago
Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Russell Wilson, Nathan Peterman, Vernon Adams, Gardner Minshew, Ryan Finley plus a couple P5->G5 guys. Besides Adams (who had injury issues) they all did well enough to be drafted.
D’Eriq King is still in progress at Miami, but has done fairly well as a grad transfer

krindor started the topic The most/least (statistically) similar teams to Utah in on-field performance in the forum Football 3 years, 9 months ago
Determined by finding the last decade win% for every P5 team (including the 4 new ones) against 3 different types of P5 opponents; those with 3 or fewer P5 wins, those with 4-6 P5 wins, and those with 7+ P5 wins. And then taking sum of squares of differences to see which is most/least similar.
Most similar
1. UCLA2. Northwestern3. West…[Read more] -

I actually just did an in-depth statistical analysis, looking at every single P5 game over the last decade in order to rank every P5 team and conference (including the new incoming ones).
Not sure the best way to post a table here, but long story short, BYU ranks #52/69. On the one hand, that’s fairly solid considering they’ve been languishing…[Read more]

Honestly, the BYU/Utah game ratings are surprisingly mediocre.
Utah has had 32 games on national television over the past 4 seasons. Games against BYU rank #11, #22 and #24 in TV viewership.

My guess is that Kansas and Iowa St will make a play to go for the Big 10. Not sure they’ll pull it off, but they are both AAU members. The bigger concern is that with Kansas (AAU member, #21 in total revenue in 2019) in play, the BIG10 might grab them and make a play for Colorado (good history, pacifies Nebraska) which would hurt the PAC12 in a…[Read more]

Agree in general; don’t think it likely happens to the SEC, but the scorched earth could enable the PAC12 to move in.
T Boone Pickens probably has no strong feelings on the matter though, given that he died 2 years ago

It does point out that several teams are perennially underrated by FPI, Utah might be one of those.
For comparison, here’s what preseason FPI suggested for Utah each year and where they ended up

I’m pretty sure the NCAA’s new regulations don’t allow boosters to compensate athletes as “inducement for recruiting purposes.”
The NCAA literally doesn’t have any regulations on this. After the Supreme Court knocked their case out, they don’t want to do anything that looks like a limitation. Right now it’s a patchwork of various state law…[Read more]
