I like Utah at home. Similar to 2018, doubts from early loses to Washington and Washington State, diminished after with the big win over USC at home. A big game the MUSS and us other fans showing up in support leads to a big win.

I am a realistic optimist, but I am not a “homer” optimist. However, it took letting McBride go the get Urban Meyer. I’m not so sure we find another to replace Coach Whittingham. Sink or swim, I have enough bourbon to weather the losses. I will stick with the Coach for as long as he is willing the stay.

Flying back from San Deigo in 2018, I was thinking maybe the Holiday Bowl was the best the Utes could expect. Fast forward to 2019, a similar result in Texas. After a glass or two (or three) of bourbon during Saturday’s game, my mobile pinging with text messages, as the BYU half of my family gloated, I wondered again; did the Utes reach its apex…[Read more]

Tyler was very good but not great in my book, and the best QB since joining the P12. (better than other recent QBs Troy Williams, Travis Wilson and Jordan Wynn). No par with past greats he is behind Alex Smith and Brian Johnson.
– After a mediocre 2017 season, Tyler led the Utes to a win in the 2017 Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl (2/26, 165…[Read more]

In a USA Story yesterday (web link), they reported that several Power Conference teams, including Washington, Illinois and Georgia Tech paid big bucks, only to lose to the team they paid to pad their schedual – no big news. USA Today tracks how team much is paid (web link), and I note that BYU paid both Utah and Arizona State to play them at…[Read more]

I was happy with Brewer. I was excited about Rising, and wanted to see more. Different styles perhaps. Brewer more of a pocket passer? Rising a gun-slinter?
Looking forward to next week!!

Special teams allowed a touchdown, and cost the Utes an extra point. Is eight points enough to swing a game against the Utes, say the in-state team next week?
I expect the coaches with nine days to prepare will have the kick-return game fixed. And one (1) missed extra point missed in the last 75 is generally good kicking.
Otherwise I think…[Read more]

The only game I remember (I was at the game as a Army ROTC Cadet) from the 70s was the Utah win over BYU on November 20, 1978. Link
“Utah (5-6), who has lost 6-straight games to BYU, again finds themselves losing to the Coogs (7-2) by as many as 16 points. Under these circumstances, the Utes pulled together and pulled off one of their most…[Read more]

After 40 years as an adult watch Utah-BYU games
The reasons BYU is the better team now:
– BYU dominance in the 70s/80s – old news
– 1984 National Champions – by vote, not by beating the better teams – a good team no doubt
– “.. the Lord steps in… Magic “happens”, not fit but for “pumping my gas” – player mindset
– the Refs – pick any…[Read more]

The Utes are not sneaking up on anybody this year. The cost of getting consistently better. Also goes to how the Utes played in the short 2020 year, the commitment of the returning starters, and aggressive recruiting on the transfer portal.
Go Utes!

I watched the 2020 Utah vs Colorado (again), very impressed (again) with Nephi Sewell. I’ve heard much about Devin Lloyd this summer, no doubt for good reason, but little on Sewell. How has he looked, hopefully anchoring the defensive backfield.

No – Not Clay Davis. But I would not be surprise that my A&M Grad friend cut and pasted, cobbled together a bunch of articles into he email back to me. I don’t think he intended to plagiarize, but simply pass on to me, what he read and incorporated as his “take”, and that I posted to this blog.

My A&M friend’s take.
The Houston Chronicle broke this story, specifically, Texas A&M beat writer, Brent Zwerneman.
And it was broken on the very day A&M was appearing in Birmingham, just in time for them to speak to the largest media assembly of the year.
That’s awfully convenient, don’t you think?
So this feels like a targeted intentional lea…[Read more]

According to a 247 article today Utah lost more that it gained in the transfer portal. Agree?
80. Bryan Thompson, WR, Arizona State (from Utah)
103. Charlie Brewer QB, Utah (from Baylor)
114. Jordan Wilmore RB, Fresno State (from Utah)
128. Orlando Umana, OL, Ole Miss (from Utah)

I met John Stockton as a Rookie, at the Police Athletic League facility on SLC’w west side. Early eighties. I imagined he would be short, considering how he looked side-by-side with Malone and the others. I was very surprised at how large he was in person at 6′ / 6’1″. He was well built, with extraordinarily large hands and feet. He could…[Read more]

Tangent discussion to Running Ute Basketball. But a good example of how Gonzaga’s preeminent alumnist, John Stockton primes to pump for recruiting. Also a very good story – John is still a beast.

Worried, not so much. For BYU a plus; but with a new QB, and a difficult schedule, the Nacau brothers may have wished that had stayed at Utah and UW. Utah will miss S. Nacua, but I have confidence in Enis, Covey, Dixon, Vele and other WRs, particularly with Chad Bumphis coming on board.
BYU gains some depth, but production, at least against…[Read more]
