The Big 12 commissioner has alleged he posses irrefutable evidence that ESPN conspired with the AAC (*Not ACC) to pick up 3-5 Big 12 teams following the departure of UT and OU.

What an insane development. If this is true, this could build a credible ESPN conspiracy element to the realignment fiasco. My basic understanding is this:

ESPN leveraged a massive new exclusive media contract with the SEC in 2024. In order to increase their revenue for this new contract ESPN then brokers a deal to get UT and OU to leave the Big 12 for the SEC. Importantly, ESPN only partially owns the Big 12 broadcasting rights. By contrast, they will have complete ownership of the SEC broadcasting rights, netting them a huge payday—particularly with the addition of UT and OU. After getting the SEC expansion done, ESPN then approaches 3-5 of the remaining Big 12 teams and tries to convince them to join the AAC, which ESPN also has exclusive rights to. This way they have a complete monopoly on the most profitable athletic conference in college sports and have destroyed a Power 5 conference they didn’t own complete rights to, significantly hurting their rival FOX. They also have another money-maker with exclusive rights now in a brand new souped-up AAC conference.

It’s quite possible this is much ado about nothing but if it’s true this could be a monumental development.

Interesting.  Seems to me it would be easier, and make more financial sense for the Big XII to poach 2-4 teams from the AAC.  Not the AAC scooping up teams from the Big XII.

With UT and OU out, and WVU still in, it would make the most sense to add Cincinnati and Houston (to get back to 10), or both of them plus UCF and either Memphis or USF (to get back to 12).  That AAC is already at 11 teams, so adding 3-5 would most likely decrease their per-teamm share of the pie.

The point is for ESPN to own the exclusive rights to the AAC + BigXII while Fox will be left holding the partial rights to a dissolved BigXII. If the BigXII adds teams from the AAC, ESPN has to continue to share the rights to the BigXII with Fox.

ESPN will be forced to sack 15 of their employees.

Those responsible for sacking the people who have just been sacked have been sacked.

BigXII trying to sue ESPN/Disney? That’ll definitely work out in their favor. Where’s the popcorn?

The case is tortious interference with contractual relations. If the Big XII dissolves UT and OU don’t have to pay the exit penalty. If AAU picks up XII castoffs then ESPN can capture that too.

Want to watch college football on Disney+? That’s what this is about. It’s vertical capture of the sport.

Come on now, that’s not Capitalism. Politics on this board needs to be distained. It’s the wart on society today that can send us back to caves.

My recommendation: Stay here to be informed about the Utes and only the Utes. Or anything that affects The U. Try to help us with information that helps us, not hurts us, or maybe annoys us.
