Was talking to someone I know the other day who is in the know at one of the Big10 schools. He told me flat out…Oregon and Washington are pretty much a done deal. Then he said probably Stanford and ND then they are done. Everything moving to 2 powerhouse conferences and told me Utah’s best move would be to go with Colorado, and the two AZ schools to the Big 12.

I read somewhere on the internet today that this guy knows another guy who is in the know at one of the Big 10 schools.  The second guy told the first guy flat out . . that Oregon and Washington are pretty much a done deal, and then the first guy posted it online.

What a coincidence, I know the guy on the internet that knows someone in with that Big10 program. Of course it is through an online gaming group but he swears by it and I can prove it because his screen name is “INtheBig10Know.”

It might happen. Honest question, why didn’t the BIG take UO and UW if it’s a done deal already?

My theory (pure speculation) is expansion is done in the the big and sec until they are due for a new tv contract. They went to 14 teams last time they signed a contract, 16 this time, I expect 18 next time and 20 the time after that. They are constantly trying to create more value. ACC teams were not available in this window but will be next time. Every decision is about making the most money they can right now. We will have to see which teams provide the most value when the time comes. The only thing Utah can do is keep winning and building our brand.

This assumes that you are getting people to pay for sports who don’t watch sports, like Rutgers to the Big 10.

If it goes more subscription based, then you will lose billions in revenue and teams like Rutgers and Stanford become worthless.

I think you will see USC and UCLA and Texas and Oklahoma go to their new conferences.

I think you will see the next tv deal be smaller. Then you will see contraction. USC, UCLA, TX, OU will leave because the money isn’t there anymore (or the gap isn’t as large) and their fanbases will be p**sed they have become mid level teams. You will see the Big 10 kick teams out, like Rutgers and Maryland, because they bring the “per team” amount down.

UCLA and USC will go back to the PAC-10. Texas and Oklahoma will build another conference they can dominate.

Gonna be more than 40 teams in the final iteration. ACC GOR slows things down for now but we keep putting ourselves in great position to be highly visible (unlike some other teams out West 😉). The ones panicking are the ones not even in semi-consideration.

Don’t get too caught up in the short term stuff. We’re absolutely in the discussion and will eventually be included IMO. Gonna take some patience for everything to work itself out. Keep promoting the Utah football culture, keep improving research and academic ranks and keep winning the way we have been and it’s all gonna be ok.

I mentioned one iteration of college football in 10 years. Onlyu brings up the other. Instead of conferences, college football stops pretending to be about school and they treat it like a business. You’ll see 50-64 teams come together. They will have a single tv deal, they will have revenue sharing, a salary cap, a player’s union, etc. You’ll have a big playoff and conference games, etc.

It will become a pro league, which is ok. It will feel the same as now, just with more parody. It will be easier for Utah to compete in a system like that then the current one.

Either way, in 10 years we will still be here, excited about Utah football.

Without the school allegiances, I don’t see it competing/surviving, especially if it is at the same time as the NFL and the NFL sees it as competition. The new USFL is already there and trying to survive by taking the time the NFL doesn’t play. The college game is the college game because of the Universities. I think it is a lot more likely. There will NEVER really be parity in the sport, and that is actually part of the fun: we see the ‘little’ guys rise up to become big guys like TCU and US. We aren’t at the program level like USC, OSU, UM, Alabama, Texas, etc., but we compete with them on the FIELD and that is how we will get there. Expanded access to the playoff is the best way to get to more fun and a chance for programs to come onto the scene. We did it, TCU did it, Cincinati/UCF and teams like that are doing it. We need to keep doing it though. BSU has largely fallen out because they didn’t sustain their success after Peterson left.

Did you friend “in-the-know” acknowledge that it all hinges on ND media deal with NBC in a few years. If ND gets $70M per year (which they most likely will) they will stay independent. The conferences aren’t going to freeze out ND. Nothing happens until ND makes their deal in a few years.
