twice so Utah could back into the Rose Bowl and Oregon could be in the playoff? Well, the actual scenario that happened of Utah dominating twice kicks so much ass and is 100x better that most everyone forgot about that old folly thinking. Obviously, recruiting will be much better the way things played out. The Utes will cash in via the portal and HS recruiting.

CincyUte probably one of the most sarcastic funny posters on this site. No need to be too serious.

Haha, nice try. I was going to try and see who the guilty parties were, but finding old posts is not easy.

CincyUte — Ute Dub was correct.  There actually were some fans suggesting this.  Mostly cougar fans, but there were also a few Ute fans who’d expressed thoughts that we might wanna consider this path as the surest way to Pasadena — both on here and in the DNews.  I’d read them too.

Stay the hell away from Utah and you might succeed at Miami.

Lol yeah those people get their *sports expert cards suspended for at least a year.

You ALWAYS play to win. There is literally no exception to this rule. Well, one exception – if your professional sports team is going nowhere then yeah feel free to tank for a higher draft pick.

Yeah, no serious fan ever wanted that. That’s a loser mentality. I want to win every single game.

Beating Oregon twice, winning the conference outright, and EARNING our way into the Rose Bowl is way better than backing our way into it without even winning the conference (just like Ohio State did 😂).

Was it them saying we should or recognizing that the math technically works better that way?

There were definitely Ute fans calling for Utah to intentionally lose the 1st game against Oregon so that Utah would go to the Rose Bowl whether they won or lost the CCG.

I wouldn’t say that attiude was common, but it was out there.

I don’t remember people actually calling for Utah to lose both. I think it was more speculation that it would be best for the conference to have a playoff team in addition to getting a team into the Rose Bowl. That speculation died quickly once it was pointed out that Utah would not have been guaranteed a Rose Bowl berth as the loser of the CCG.

Plenty of people on Twitter wanted it. It became a rather contentious topic for a while.

It must have been someone I put on “ignore,” because I don’t remember anyone ever calling for Utah to intentionally lose to Oregon.  And, like many of you, I’m constantly reading this board.

Does it matter? Of course it is ‘statistically’ more difficult to beat the same team twice than just once.  The fallacy in this line of thinking is that losing the first game somehow makes you more likely to win the second one…

And yes, I understand the line of thinking also had us losing twice to Oregon and still going to the Rose Bowl.. but why would anyone want that?

Statistically you’re more likely to beat a team twice than you are to split wins.

The math didn’t even work better that way. Had the Utes lost twice they would have finished 8-5 while both UCLA and ASU finished 8-4. Who do you think gets in in that scenario? My bet is UCLA.

Not for one second did I feel Utah would have been better off losing to Oregon in Salt Lake.   Oregon sweeping Utah could still have left them #5 had (for example) Oklahoma State beaten Baylor and/or other results occurred.  And even with Oregon in the CPF, a 8-5 Utah team could still have been pushed aside (happened to Colorado a few years ago) for a more ‘desireable’ team.
