I’m one of those who felt the “rivalry” ended in 2010. From 2011 through 2023, it was just 2 schools that happened to be geographically close playing each other on a consistent basis. Since the two schools no longer had common goals, the need to constantly contrast Utah’s successes and failures in light of whatever the parochial school happened…[Read more]

I said the same as soon as the schedule came out. Cross country, short week, have to deal with whatever Thanksgiving stuff the team does.,, all of that is before you consider the access they have to some of the best recruiting areas of the country and a coach who has been to a National Championship game before.
UCF’s path is pretty similar to…[Read more]

It’s a little early to call him a failure at Colorado. He improved over the previous season across the board: sellouts at a place that previously couldn’t give tickets away, much improved roster, 3 more wins, national attention. He has made Colorado a destination for recruits instead of an afterthought.
Hunter and Sanders (maybe both) will be…[Read more]

Follow up: I think Utah is between 80 and 83 scholarships using the current roster and expected enrollees/transfers that will happen for fall. Any errors are mine but it’s the best I can do from 30,000 feet.,,
QB (3) – Rising, Rose, Wilson
RB (6) – Bernard, Glover, Woods, Mitchell, Randle, Stanley
WR (10) – Singer, Calderella, Zipperer,…[Read more] -

The biggest problem is that there isn’t a good resource to find out how many scholarships a school currently has allocated. 247 tries but they struggle, especially right now when a portal window is just closing so you have to do your own homework. Even if you ignore errors for which class kids should be in on the link: Smedley is in the portal…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Transfer Portal in the forum Football 1 year ago
Yes, by the current standard of the ever changing rules.,, I expect the windows to go back to open at any time after the NCAA went to unlimited transfers and immediate eligibility.
Not sure how they can enforce anything at this point other than that a kid can only play for one team per season. And if you were to war game out a semi-pro super…[Read more]

Surely you aren’t suggesting that rewarding oneself with hookers and blow is a bad thing?

NFL doesn’t have guaranteed contracts and I don’t believe they start paying until you actually make the final cut and the season starts. So until then, he’s just trying to keep his head above water with whatever stipend he would get.
If his family needed money, there had to be a better short-term option. It feels like they got caught up in the…[Read more]

1st round isn’t done yet (waiting on Arizona) but at this point:
Utah played against 8 of the 1st rounders in 2023. An additional 3 in previous seasons in Daniels, Robinson and Harrison.

That was the 1988 Rice Bowl to break the 9 game loss streak. Sean Knox recovered but I can’t remember who had the hit.

Iowa State is going to be in the mix and if Kansas can keep Jalon Daniels healthy, they will be there also. I think you can put a blanket over 5 to 6 teams at this point and just see who separates during the season.
No one really has a gauntlet like we saw in the PAC the last 2 years so it may come down to tie-breakers to even get into the game.

2008 National Champ replied to the topic G5 Playoff and/or reorganization in talks in the forum Football 1 year ago
I think it depends on what year you are talking. National opinion forced Utah to be allowed to break through in ’04 and by ’08/’09, there was a groundswell with TCU and Boise that one spot wasn’t enough. Realignment slowed that talk down but in the initial 4 team structure, the G5’s agreed to just the one spot that they were already getting…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic G5 Playoff and/or reorganization in talks in the forum Football 1 year ago
There’s been 11 votes(voters) since they decided to go to a playoff and it has had to be unanimous every step of the way. The time to force anything was before the initial playoff started, and the next best option was while the 12 team options were being floated. Instead, they were just happy to go along with the bigger conferences as long as…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic G5 Playoff and/or reorganization in talks in the forum Football 1 year ago
The problem is that the G5’s have had equal representation at the votes and keep voting to give themselves scraps. The time to stand up for themselves has pretty much passed by this point so I’m not sure what leverage they have.
Until they are willing to force change, this sounds like just more clickbait speculation

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Transfer Portal Needs in the forum Football 1 year ago
I’m not at practice so I certainly don’t have any insight other than speculation. At the same time, the RB room is starting to resemble the QB room from a year ago with Charlie Vincent playing the Bryson Barnes role. Cute story but not what you want to have your season riding on.
Bernard has had multiple years to seize the RB1 spot and hasn’t…[Read more]

I may be in the minority but I see one of the three RS Freshman backs taking over RB1 by season’s end. I don’t think Utah needs a transfer as much as they need to figure out what they have and move on from any that haven’t shown they can handle the job by now.
There’s just a logjam at the position that won’t be helped by bringing in someone to…[Read more]
