Starting to see more player analysis and depth chart projections as of late (kudos to Butters). I know it’s not an original thought, but especially when I look at the projected offense I have to admit that my very strongest emotion is ambivalence. Having a great offensive line is awesome for your team, but there will be exactly zero times this season watching the offense come to the line where I will think “I can’t wait to see if the guard pulls on this play”. All of that attention will be paid to a stable of skill players that I have virtually no emotional connection to. In the era of the college athlete mercenary where players seek the highest bidder every off season, even your team’s veterans are strangers.

I’m invested in this team, but I feel it slipping. The disconnect is growing which is terrifying to me and should be terrifying to college football. It’s getting to the point where I genuinely question how excited I would even be if the program had a successful season because of the growing disconnect that the player carousel creates. People can downvote this all they want, but it’s just an honest reaction. For those that feel the same emotion how are you managing to stay passionate? It would be so sad to see Utah Football follow the path of Utah Basketball.

College football has always been a player carousel.
The carousel is simply moving a bit faster in the transfer era.

Players have always come and gone, with limited eligibility and aspirations to leave and play in the NFL.
There have been plenty of Utah players who only really had one good year; that doesn’t mean they weren’t exciting.

Sure it’s disappointing when players leave; however, we’ve never had a player stay forever.

I don’t mean to imply that I like the current transient nature of College Football, just that it is an acceleration of a preexisting state.

I would love for our best players to stay here as long as possible.

There’s just not much I can do. I can either accept this new reality and enjoy what I can, or stop consuming CFB content (not likely, for now).

I’m in the same spot you are and this upcoming season might be my last as a season ticket holder. I have no problem with athletes getting paid but there need to be some guardrails instituted to bring stability to college sports. You cannot have eternal and constant free-agency if you want fans to remain connected and involved with a team. This is something that the pros figured out a long time ago. However, they were probably able to do so because their athlete footprint is on a much smaller scale. I don’t know what else to say, but what is taking place now isn’t working for me. I used to know the entire starting roster by heart. Now, they’re just strangers to me.

Well said, Miami. This echos my feelings.

For the first time in my life, I am thinking of taking a step back in my fandom. The 2024 season was very painful, and the 2023 season was not a lot better. I enjoyed the 1975 1-10 season more than this last season. This may seem odd, but the expectations were limited back in 75.

I have no idea what the 2025 season will bring. I hope we see a team that is united and plays well; I do not expect our Utes to win the conference championship. I want to see an offense that can score points. 🙂

My primary displeasure isn’t with NIL. It is with the new conference we have landed in. I really loved beating Oregon and USC especially. I have little excitement for our new “rivals” in the league. Perhaps that will grow over time, but meh.

I think for Utah fans it is a combination of what you feel Tony and what the original poster and Miami said. I want the PAC12 / Rose Bowl days back but it is not going to happen no matter what this team does.

Oh Tony, that’s the other part…I feel no affinity, at all, for the Big XII…honestly, and this might sound sacrilegious, I would rather be in a regional conference like the MWC provided Utah got the same money, at least, as in the Big XII…I rather enjoyed playing teams like Air Force, Wyoming, etc…plus they made neat road trips as well…I personally will never set foot in Texas for an away game, and it isn’t that I have anything against Texas…

I never thought I would hear the words Wyoming and neat road trips in the same sentence.

You guys nailed it: there aren’t any teams in the BigXII (including TDS) that I am excited to beat. I’m bummed that the feeling I got with those absolute wars with USC will never happen again. Also, we spent all winter stressed out about what players were going to get poached away from us. At some point, instead of whining, I’m just going to go away.

Said a few times that USC and Utah had many memorable exciting close games, lots of them settled in the closing seconds, with both teams enjoying their share of being on the happy side of the scoreboard.

Sadly may not see them face each other again for some time.

If ever….maybe in some unforeseen future where we both make the playoffs…and then the network(s) will have a field day trotting out highlights from those contests.

The past two years have been hard to watch. Injuries, poor coaching decisions, NIL, transfer portal, late games and escalating ticket prices have tapped me out. First time since the early 70’s I did not renew my season tickets.

It has been a phenomenal run for me. Going with my dad then my daughter and my grandkids. The lows then highs have been fun to watch. In the end it’s time for someone else to enjoy my seats and hopefully have 50+ years of being there to cheer on the Utes. I will be there in spirit and become an armchair quarterback.

My advice to all Ute fans: support the team and program. Don’t set expectations to high and go enjoy a Saturday afternoon or evening with friends and family to create some everlasting memories. And one more thing: Go Utes!!

IF UTAH WINS THE CONFERENCE TITTLE, AND MAKES SOME NOISE IN THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR, FO SURE THEY GET AN INVITE TO THE B10, AND EVERYTHING WILL GO BACK TO NORMAL. AS LONG AS BY-WHO STAYS THE HELL OUT, THIS IS THE BEST CASE SENARIO.

Worst thing about NIL is has bought (not brought) cougar fans out of the closet. FO SURE.

I think it’s important to know what you can influence versus what you cant influence. At least IMO. Show up with friends and family, have a good time, enjoy the food, etc. Whoever you showed up as won’t be changed following the game because of the outcome. The transfer portal doesn’t help, but even before the current era it isn’t like Gionni Paul or Eric Weddle could’ve stayed forever.

Lots of good thoughts on here about NIL, effects of the Big XII transition and such, but this comment gets at the heart of it for me. The idea of putting on a red shirt, going to the game, eating some good food and passively enjoying the action while leaving emotion aside with everything I can’t control is not the way I have consumed Utah football for decades. The NCAA and these players are asking me to “fall in like” with the team when I have been borderline obsessed with the team in the past. When’s the last time the “let’s break up, but promise we will stay good friends” actually worked? Let’s start with never and go from there. My wife doesn’t get why recent changes are such an issue, which makes perfect sense. She has never been able to tell me who the fourth string safety was recruited by or what the 3rd string running back’s 40 time is. I’m just worried for the future, that’s all.

It’s interesting to me how some pine for the P12. I had my fill of that nonsense conference. Poorly managed, s**t start times, horrible officiating, zero reputational bump, terrible money, and a sad mix of haves and have nots. If your name wasn’t USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, or Arizona the P12 didn’t give a s**t about you. It’s no wonder it folded, everyone in it, including the anointed ones, couldn’t wait to get out. But I get it if I’m in the minority, after all I’ve lived in the midwest for most of my adult life, so I’m excited about the team coming east rather than west.

However, I also think the point is moot if the NCAA doesn’t figure out a way to incorporate some sort of contract to the NIL that at least gives the school and fan base some expectation that the players they pay big bucks for are actually going to stick around for a couple of years. Just as I’m a fan of players getting paid because they are ostensibly adult professionals, I’m also a fan of them having obligations tied to that money that lasts more than 1 season. The small market team that takes a flyer on a midlevel recruit that blossoms, should at least get the benefit of find for the subsequent year if they are willing to sign a 2 year deal.

I want to downvote the first part and upvote the second part, so I guess I’ll do neither.

I would much rather be in the Pac-12; however, you are correct that it was poorly managed.
NIL contracts definitely need to happen.

I respect your opinion but I’m the opposite. I live in California and the local teams have a hard time filling the stadium, which means I could take my family to games for cheap.
As far as the NCAA goes, my opinion is that it’s dead. Even if it somehow survives, it will do the bidding of the big conferences, which means we are left out.

Oddly enough, I had the opposite reaction to seeing all the unfamiliar names. While I’m not really happy with the NIL situation, I’m thrilled that we have finally moved on from Rising. I don’t have any issues with him, but I am glad we’ve moved on. I’m excited to see what Beck and Dampier can accomplish with better talent around them.

I will admit that I’m a little skeptical of that surrounding talent, BUT I think our solid offensive line will go a long way in making them look good.

Biggest concern for me is staying healthy, because our depth has really taken a hit over the last couple of years.
