Boom! WR Tobias Merriweather transfers from Cal to Utah!
Very nice pickup for Utah! I’m feeling much better about the WR room with the addition of Simmons and now Merriweather.
Big guy. Height 6-5, 205 pounds according to the 247 page.
Merriweather has a 247 transfer 87 ranking.
His 2022 high school ranking was a very solid 4-star 247…[Read more]

Uh no.
I’m saying that if Dampier is throwing like he did last year, the offense is likely to resemble what we generally saw pre-Rising – a conservative offense with a game manager under center. Traditionally, that style of offense has limited Utah’s potential but also a big reason these receivers are skittish coming to Utah.

It will be sustainable for some, not so sustainable for others. So, I do expect a significant realignment and schools that were at a disadvantage in the old system (say SMU and BYU) emerging as potential powers, while some schools step back because they don’t have the resources to match the higher rollers.
Utah’s method of success the last 30 or…[Read more]

I think we can all agree that once you clear 6’8, you can be a rim protector but
it doesn’t mean you are, and you can be 7′ and suck.Last year, if I’m remembering correctly, we were one of the biggest teams in the NCAA. But we just weren’t that good, on offense or defense, or at least not good enough to get to the dance.
While it looks…[Read more]

I think you are probably right here. My question is how many people would shed tears over Cal dropping football? I don’t think that many. None in Georgia and Ohio, and probably not that many in the Berkeley area.
I am not trying to say whether it would be good or bad for Cal to drop football but it would certainly not destroy college football if…[Read more]

All I know is that he’s a Covid player…he started at BYU in 2020, transferred to Utah in 2021, transferred to UCONN in 2022, transferred back to Utah in 2023, and hasn’t played a down the last two seasons. Hard to see how, after five college football seasons where he hasn’t even played in a game, he’s anything more than a footnote. Stranger…[Read more]

You make some great points Chin. Length can have different meanings. To me length is tall, long arms and able to jump quick to out reach the other guy and block shots. Height is how tall you are. Not the same.

You are calling my take dumb when your take doesn’t even address what I actually said. HILARIOUS! I never said our team was better. I never said I preferred the greater size (vertically anyway) of last year’s team. I never said those players were anything to strive for. Someone said the team was built around length. I pointed out that we had more…[Read more]

Yes, he is. Keita is not on this team. I don’t care how tall they are. They can be 10 inches tall. If they average 2 blocks a game, they will be a good rim protector. The height isn’t the point. A tall guy would be nice to have in case that is needed. We just need rim protection, which we do not have much of at the moment (unless these guys just…[Read more]

We may have a rim protector on the team, but it is hard to say because most of the guys have only had about 15 minutes a game to go off of. Looks like we have two guys that averaged around a block per game over their careers. Either of them could potentially increase that total next year. However, I think if either one is the rim protector, our…[Read more]

Here’s the problem that I have when people talk about collective bargaining. When collective bargaining enters the fray, you’re no longer a student but an employee of the university. And, if/when that happens, that opens up an entirely different Pandora’s Box of unintended consequences. For example, a lot of the top academic schools (Stanford,…[Read more]

Miami, I agree with you. I do not like the direction of college football. It is fun to see teams like Utah State, Northern Illinois, Wyoming, etc. have great seasons. These teams will serve as a farm club for the elite. They will be the 2A teams. The FCS teams will be 1A. Utah and BYU will likely be 3A teams. The major league teams will be…[Read more]

I’m not sure it will crash and burn but it will look very different.
The most likely outcome, IMO, is that a new governing body for the top level of CFB and that the players will be able to collectively bargain. Once this happens everything will be reigned in. Contacts will be enforceable, transfer rules set, payment models established, etc.…[Read more]

I’m sorry but having a 6’8″ point guard who rarely, if ever used his length to any advantage, and a 7 footer who neither blocks shots, nor makes free throws, is anything to strive for or compared against what Alex is putting together here. Just a dumb, contrarian take.

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic Babacar Faye in the forum Basketball (Men) 1 week, 2 days ago
Is Keita considered a rim protector at 6’8”? I would say he is. Long arms and quick jumping ability can be effective rim protectors. Plus be able to guard the perimeter better in pick and roll switches.

I’ve discussed rim-protecting with my sons a little. We do hope for someone with true center size who can protect the rim and be a nice lob threat.
Don’t you think that Dawes could play the role of rim protector? I seem to recall a few moments in the season where he came from the weak side and made some nice blocks. I realize that’s only one…[Read more]
