Need more information to evaluate. Is this a chance to occupy the unused scholarship for a year? Does this round out the scout team given a 8 or 9 man rotation? There are others ahead of him at SG and Wing. Will he occupy a spot that could be used in next years recruiting?

As has been noted, if Rising is out of his brace and can run, and if TT returns to late 2021 form (last Saturday was encouraging), and if Kincaid is playing and making catches – I very much like our chances. We have had several very good teams in the Pac the last few years but none have gone thru the conference undefeated. Oregon is not better…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Brandon Carlson says he definitely thinks the team will be better this year in the forum Basketball (Men) 2 years, 8 months ago
They will be better, don’t know how far they will climb in the conference standings. Carlson is the only center in the 15 member first and second team preseason all conference teams. I like his backup Keita. They both run the floor quite well. We did not see Anthony who is key to the team. We have not seen Tarlac to see if he will figure in…[Read more]

A player can have a better experience in a different scheme with team strength not a factor. Next, two teams may appear to be the same to someone that does not go to practice but very different to someone that does. The personal fit can sometimes be the greatest factor and could be difficult to assess before you arrive. Last, often people put…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Quinton Ganther has created a nasty RB room. in the forum Football 2 years, 8 months ago
I agree, QC is doing an awesome job. Whitt has always been able to design a strict step by step to give a player a path back that is almost always successful. The next RBs up are showing a lot of promise. However, currently we do not have a RB at the level of TT or Pledger at the end of last year. TT and Bernard might get there by Oregon and…[Read more]

Smith had to start from a record rock bottom with no time. Now he needs to overcome the memory of the first year. But myself, I feel they are running plays and making adjustments better than any coach since Rick. They have better chemistry than since I don’t know when. I like coach Smith. Last year he had such a talent deficit that it was…[Read more]

Watching USC and Utah play after their match it was clear they beat each other up. But the game left me feeling we have little over on USC due to the degree of difficulty of our win. Last weekend USC spend much of the game trying to get separation from Az. even though they have only a single league win. So why not take them somewhat seriously.…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Oregon, USC, Utah all at 8-1 in the forum Football 2 years, 8 months ago
If Utah can beat Oregon I expect we will have 3 teams with 1 loss making the space between them very small, injuries or bad games aside. Utah needs to get healthy all the way down to TT to make this season end on a high note.

I must admire any school that has such a alum that is both deeply proud of their school while coming from a collection of the top 1% all time. As for the conference, I am not aware of a more animated supporter. As an announcer he has a range of interest off topic of the game that bother many but he is a voice that you would welcome in your…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Weather for Saturday looking unsettled in the forum Football 2 years, 8 months ago
Remember when Rick Rod had his players practice under the sprinklers a few days before coming up and beating us in the rain? Lets hope Utah gets a couple of practices done using footballs that have been soaking in a bucket. Wet balls are underthrown.

If he only played in 1 game I would think it is an easy, simple red shirt year last year.

Bummer. I would like to see him catch on to maybe the best team, now I hope he can catch on with a team down the line.

Charlie replied to the topic Pac12 3-way tiebreaker with Utah, Oregon, and USC in the forum Football 2 years, 8 months ago
Just win out and we are in. A loss to Oregon makes it quite iffy because UCLA and USC will not likely loose until they meet. Oregon’s likely loss is to us or they go undefeated. Our run game needs to show good progress each of the next 3 games to match up with Oregon.

Charlie replied to the topic Top PAC-12 Defenses – YPG Allowed in the forum Football 2 years, 8 months ago
Could it be possible that the young defense will get better as the year fills out? Could the defense benefit if the offense gets a run game going better to run the clock? Unless our arrow begins to point down I expect our numbers to improve somewhat.

If you go back and look at the path Utah and TCU had to take to become competitive in a P5 conference you realize this step takes time. As you build expectations for the Y to climb this step you should consider Utah and TCU were a bit further along in the fight to compete in the BCS era. However, they will be entering a B12 that is not as strong…[Read more]

If Baxter is the same guy we played against last year, we are better with just that. If Carlson does not miss games, better still. I expect the players from last year will improve. I think the new players will be better than those we lost. It is also good to get a second big back even if he is a freshman. The Utes will be better, we just need…[Read more]

Both offense and defense stepped up in pass protection and pass rush. National sack leaders 0 sacks, Utah 4 sacks.

I am hoping our running game takes another step closer to last year, USC’s run defense creates an opportunity. The passing game needs to take another step in filling the hole left by Kuithe. Those with contain assignments for broken play QB runs need to improve a step. A few more kickoffs into the EZ would be nice. Each will help us win but…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Was last year the best year Utah Football will ever have? in the forum Football 2 years, 9 months ago
We didn’t see 2004, 2008 or 2021 coming. We may not see the next great year coming. In between there will be years that disappoint. There are a bunch of schools in the conference with more money, tradition and more advantage than Utah so it will not be a regular occurrence but our turn will come more often than is our share. We are 5 of 6…[Read more]
