If you don’t believe that Utah can ever recruit a class any better than the middle of the conference (so #6), then I say those are pretty low expectations.
Forget the national rankings and focus on the conference. The only teams that we will likely never out-recruit in any given year are USC and Oregon. Just not going to happen. But can Utah…[Read more]

O line depth will be the big issue. Finding 3 new quality starters can maybe be done if we are lucky, but their backups are a different story.
Receivers are a dumpster fire outside of Covey and possibly Dixon. And even these two are both undersized and have the dropsies (IMO these two issues are connected by both being justifiably concerned…[Read more]

Because without the rest of the conference being perceived strongly, a 1-loss Pac 12 champ Utah gets stuck with the Rose Bowl a la Ohio State. Or a 2-loss Utah Pac 12 runner up gets WSUd into the Alamo instead of the Fiesta – perception of Pac 12 weakness is absolutely why this happened to WSU. The Fiesta would have been thrilled to have WSU,…[Read more]

Well add me to the list. Fans need to relax. This is a road game in the Pac-12 and the opponent was far from terrible.
On top of that, we’re down Fitts, Lotulelei, Dielman, Patrick for most of the game, CBB, and Fulks (I also suspect something is wrong with Phillips’ kicking leg). Injuries to a team’s top DT, C, DE, and three starting WRs…[Read more]

It’s like our last two drives just never happened. Both were excellent execution with plenty of nice passes.
Apparently, merely not passing makes you a bad team. Funny that David Shaw never got that memo.

Our OL played relatively poorly against SUU. Otherwise, the OL has not played that badly at all.
Most of the time, line play is a war of attrition. If both teams have decent technique and are equally talented, it comes down to who is better coached and conditioned for the late game. The team that is better on this front starts taking over in…[Read more]

1. Prevent the big running play. This is mostly on our linebackers to get off the blocks and make tackles on Jamaal Williams. I have confidence in our DL to stuff many runs at minimal gains. But Williams will get a few breaks. If he turns too many 6-8 yard rushes into 25+ yard rushes, this will keep BYU close. They don’t have the talent at…[Read more]

Tony, I had a pretty similar experience growing up in Utah. It’s only ‘religious’ in the sense that the offending group happens to be a religion. It can happen with any closed group choosing to conduct themselves the way they do.
Even funnier, my wife also says she barely recognizes me watching a Utah/BYU football game. I no longer live in…[Read more]
GreatNorthernUte replied to the topic Week 2 rankings? in the forum Football 7 years, 7 months ago
Who cares? Rankings at this point might as well be monkeys throwing darts at a dartboard.
I actually really despise preseason polls. They do nothing but serve the interests of college football royalty by ‘anchoring’ the royalty teams to higher rankings despite poor results.
If the AP had integrity, they wouldn’t release any poll until at least Week 6.
